T-Mobile Signature Store Experience

Simple Global is an interactive kiosk built for the T-Mobile Signature Store launch in Times Square. I worked on several large-format experiences for the store opening, but for this project, I focused on interaction design for a photo booth feature. I worked closely with a creative director and three technologist, along with the broader Razorfish design team and T-Mobile product owns.

User Engagement

Simple Global consists of three stacked displays about the size of a door. Middle-screen messages targeted the user, while top-screen messaging addressed other shoppers. I worked closely with our writers and visual designers to story board everything from attract messaging and timing to instructions for each task.

Photographic Process

The "selfie" feature used an integrated Kinect camera to create an image of the user at famous locations around the world. The user posed in front of the kiosk as though they were looking at a mirror. As in a mirror, our original process flipped the user's image rendering things like text on a shirt backwards. I worked with our developers on a fix that kept posing simple, while at the same time resolving the inverted image issue.

User Experience

Direct user experience was fairly straight forward. I created a set of basic instruction for the "selfie" experience. Users would step back and pose, a countdown would start, a photo would be captured, then the user could review and send the composite image to their phone.

I designed and documented the process of composing each image, as well as methods for sharing approved images. Every saved "selfie" went through a moderation step to make sure it met T-Mobile guidelines. The system sent approved images to users and displayed them in the Simple Global kiosk as well as on the large, Times Square billboard above the store.

Outcome

Simple Global and its "selfie" experience was one of the bigger draws to the T-Mobile Signature Store opening in Times Square. I visited the store daily during opening week and recorded my observations and interviewed staff about this and other features. We made a few updates to messaging within the kiosk and applied similar learnings to features for Times Square and other Signature Stores.
